Botany- Dimming Awe, The Light Is Raw


You may have heard of Botany through such previous journeys as (Norman favourite) Deepak Verbera, back in the heady days we now call Autumn 2016. For that record, Spencer Stephenson’s rich tapestries were formed by the clashes between moogs, harps and other such acoustic things, woven with such silky fluidity -- suffused with the spirit of drone. Stephenson’s music has an even higher Dilla-esque quotient here; beats are fresher, punchier, more vital -- ambience is still hazy, yet throughout the record the influences and colour-scopes of jazz innovators like Miles Davis and even the hyperactive rhythms of Stereolab (if they suffered with ADD) stand proud and forefront.

Vocals, too: ‘Au Revoir’ features a strong and confident turn from Milo while the samples stack up like the most vivid hip hop revelations before melting away like maple syrup trickling off pancakes. ‘Birthjays’ feeds a woozy moog through a gauze of Alice Coltrane mysticism. Matthewdavid appears on ‘Glow Up’ next, floating through on a Californian breeze. Everything seems brighter than before, the interplay between light and shade in sharper relief. The beats on ‘Bad CGI’ are crunchy, the repeated motifs, washes and samples rising and frolicking through a bass-driven mire that FlyLo or Kaytranada would have been proud of. Milo crops up again to flow along to the hauntological jazz dream of ‘No Translator’. So much of the real GOOD stuff here, really. To recap Botany’s latest chapter, then: more sample-delic, more psychedelic, more dazzle-delic than ever.
