Jack DeJohnette along with Larry Grenadier, John Medeski and John Scofield make a debut on Motema Music with Hudson, a special project formed in celebration of Jack’s 75th birthday this year. The ensemble takes its name from the idyllic Hudson Valley area of New York State, where each of the musicians resides. Hudson is a supergroup collective comprised of four of the world’s top instrumentalists: Jack DeJohnette (drums), Larry Grenadier (bass), John Medeski (keyboardist of Medeski Martin and Wood), and John Scofield (guitar). One of the core elements of this project is the group’s namesake: New York's Hudson River Valley. All four musicians live there and it’s also where the project was conceived of and recorded. The Hudson River Valley serves as a major source of inspiration for all the group members, with their shared love for the area’s spectacular beauty and their growing sense of concern over environmental issues facing the area. Naming the group Hudson was their way of uniting the appeal of the region with its historic heritage and widespread community of artists, writers, musicians, dancers, and activists who live there. These points are a major narrative for the project. Based on the high-profile personnel, each of whom has built extensive audiences from their individual and group projects, and the brilliance of the music, this project is not only a major event for marketing in the jazz world but will create opportunities for marketing to the jam band world as well. In addition to original compositions, Hudson features covers of songs connected to the Hudson Valley by such songwriters as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, and Joni Mitchell, creating opportunities for further marketing interest including editorial track premiere opportunities. The project came together organically as a way to celebrate music legend Jack DeJohnette’s 75th birthday. DeJohnette, an NEA Jazz Master and Grammy winner, is known for his work with Miles Davis, among many others across all genres of music.
